House Democrats on Wednesday released emails that they say raise questions about President Trump’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. The emails, which came from Epstein himself and people close to him, include a 2019 message in which Epstein wrote that Trump “knew about the girls.” Democrats say that proves Trump knew more than he lets on about Epstein’s crimes. At the same time, a new Democratic member joined Congress and promised to push for the release of all government files about Epstein. It has sparked a major fight between Democrats and Republicans over what information should become public.
What the Emails Actually Say
The released emails include messages between Epstein and author Michael Wolff. They also contain emails with Ghislaine Maxwell, a woman who is in prison for 29 years because she helped Epstein abuse young girls. One email really stands out from 2011. Epstein told Maxwell that Trump was like “that dog that hasn’t barked.” He said, “He spent hours at my house” with one of his victims. The victim’s name was blocked out in the released email, so nobody knows who it was.
Republicans also released 20,000 documents related to Epstein later that same day. Trump’s name shows up many times in these papers. In one message, Epstein talks about a 20-year-old girlfriend he “gave to Donald” back in 1993. He mentions photos of “Donald and girls in bikinis in my kitchen.” It’s not entirely clear whether Epstein was being serious or joking in these messages. Trump has always said he and Epstein were friends years ago, but had a big fight and stopped talking. He strongly denies knowing anything about Epstein hurting young girls.
Trump Says Democrats Are Lying
President Trump quickly responded to the release of the email. He wrote on his Truth Social website that Democrats are only bringing up Epstein as a way to distract people. Trump pointed to the government shutdown that lasted 43 days as the real problem. He called the Epstein emails a hoax, meaning documents made to make him look bad. Trump’s team says Democrats are playing a political game instead of focusing on the real problems.
The White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, conducted a news conference to defend these allegations. She said that these emails prove Trump did nothing wrong,
Leavitt claimed Democrats blocked out the victim’s name in the emails because it was Virginia Giuffre. Giuffre died by suicide in April this year. Before she died, Giuffre wrote a book in which she called Trump friendly but never accused him of doing anything bad to her. The White House says that proves Trump is innocent, and Democrats are hiding information that helps him.
Congress Demands the Release of More Files
A new Democratic member of Congress, Adelita Grijalva, was sworn in on Wednesday. She won a special election in Arizona seven weeks ago, but only joined Congress now. Her arrival changes the numbers in the House of Representatives. Now Democrats have enough votes to force a vote on releasing all files about Epstein that aren’t classified secrets. House Speaker Mike Johnson has been blocking this vote until now. His office said they will hold the vote next week.
This has been a problem even among Trump’s own supporters. Many Republicans believe the government is covering up information about wealthy, powerful people who were friends with Epstein. A poll last October showed that only four out of ten Republicans approve of how Trump has handled releasing Epstein files.
That’s much lower than the nine out of ten who like Trump’s overall job performance. Two Republican women in Congress – Lauren Boebert and Nancy Mace – signed a petition demanding that all files be released. Trump’s team tried to get them to remove their names, but both women refused. Mace is a survivor of sexual assault herself and says her personal experience makes this issue important to her.
