Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on Wednesday that Ukraine can still stop the current war through talks, but if those efforts are unsuccessful, then Russia will use military means to attain its objectives.

Addressing Beijing at the end of his China trip, in which he also inked a gas pipeline agreement, Putin declared his preference for diplomacy. But he made it apparent that Russia would never retreat from its main conditions, such as halting Ukraine’s move toward NATO and safeguarding Russian-speaking populations in the region.

Putin Urges Talks, But With Strings Attached

Putin informed journalists that he has “a light at the end of the tunnel” due to what he described as “sincere efforts” by the United States under President Donald Trump to achieve a settlement. He added that if “common sense” is allowed to prevail, both sides could end up having an acceptable solution.

He also expressed readiness to sit down with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in Moscow but stated that the meeting would have to be carefully prepared and yield tangible results. Ukraine’s foreign minister rapidly rejected Moscow as the site for talks, stating the proposition was “unacceptable.”

Ukraine’s Stance and Ongoing Tensions

President Zelenskiy has been calling for further sanctions on Russia if Putin does not accept peace talks. Although he is willing to negotiate, the two parties are still far apart from each other regarding the key issues. Ukraine and allies in the West keep rejecting Russia’s assertion of annexing four Ukrainian territories, describing it as an unlawful seizure.

Putin maintained that he would rather have peace but asserted that Russia “will have to resolve all tasks by force of arms” if there is no compromise. With Western sanctions taking their toll on Russia’s economy, Moscow is under strain, but Putin restated that Russia’s territorial aspirations do not change.
