Victoria Secures Australian Open Golf Hosting Rights Through 2030

Shivangi June 15, 2026
Synopsis

Victoria has secured hosting rights for three of the next four Australian Open golf championships, including the 2027 event at Peninsula Kingswood Country Golf Club. South Australia will host the 2028 tournament, while New South Wales has been overlooked despite its long history with the championship. World No.2 Rory McIlroy is also set to return for this year's Australian Open at Kingston Heath.

Golf Australia has allocated the rights to host future Australian Opens to Victoria and South Australia, with three of the next four winners of the national championship falling into Victoria's lap.

The Australian Open will be played in Victoria, under a rescheduled agreement to bring the grand slam back to 2027, co-hosted with South Australia in 2028 and then continuing again for two years from 2029. It indicates that for those years, New South Wales, the tournament's traditional ginormous host, won't be winning the title

2027 Championship to Be Hosted By Kingswood

Kingswood Country Gold Club in Frankston on the Mornington Peninsula, 55 km from Melbourne's CBD will host Australian OPEN 2027.

The 2027 Australian Open is scheduled to be played at the Peninsula Kingswood Country Golf Club in Frankston on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula some 55 kilometres from Melbourne's CBD.. It will be the venue's first big national tournament, with plans to develop a composite championship course using its two top-course-ranked courses, both ranked among Australia's top 20 golf courses. Venues in Victoria for the 2029 and 2030 editions are yet to be determined.

McIlroy To Return This Year

The Australian Open will be held at Kingston Heath Golf Club in December before the hosting changes come into effect this year.

World No 2 Rory McIlroy, a six-time major champion who drew unprecedented crowds in Australia at last November's 2025 Australian Open at Royal Melbourne will be among the players in the tournament. Rory McIlroy declared Kingston Heath the best golf course in the world late last year. It will play host to that tournament the course, at least part of the time in 2028 and also hold the Presidents Cup there.

NSW will miss out on future events

The 31st Men's Open Championships of Australia have always been played at venues in New South Wales, The Australian Golf Club and Lakes Golf Club.

The Australian Open in 1904 was held for the first time at The Australian Golf Club and The Australian and The Lakes co-hosted in 2023. Golf Australia chief executive James Sutherland said Peninsula Kingswood would bring fresh dimension to the event.

He said it was a stunning addition to the Australian Open calendar and its capacity to provide a composite championship course would offer something new and exciting for players and fans.
