U.S. Offers Venezuelan Oil to India as Russian Imports Decline

Synopsis

The world’s oil market is swinging firmly into the hands of the US now that it is pressuring India to cut ties with Venezuela and embrace American oil instead. With Nicolás Maduro's dramatic capture earlier this year, Washington has a massive stake in Venezuela’s oil industry. The US is offering this alternative in an effort to support India in reducing its reliance on importing from Russia and for New Delhi to avoid the 50 per cent taxes it currently faces. Here’s why this exchange of energy is a big deal for both countries.

NEW DELHI — The United States is pursuing a major change in the way India gets its energy. Washington has informed New Delhi that it can begin buying significantly more oil from Venezuela soon, sources say. Timing could not be better, the US has been trying to nudge India into buying less oil from Russia (an issue that’s contributed a lot of acrimony between the two countries lately).

India has been in a bind for much of the past year. As a result, because it kept purchasing cheap oil from Russia, the US began to impose massive taxes on Indian goods, some as high as 50%. Is this new deal the “reset button” that India has long sought to recalibrate its trade ties with the US?

Chapter one

A New Chapter For Venezuelan Oil

Everything was different in Venezuela when on January 3, 2026 as US soldiers apprehended the country’s ruler Nicolás Maduro. Since then, the United States has assumed control over Venezuela’s government and its huge oil reserves.

Before this, the US warned countries they would be subject to additional taxes if they bought oil from the Maduro regime. But now that the US is a co-runner of affairs in Caracas, they are encouraging allies such as India to return to the table. Venezuelan oil will fill the gap so that India need not depend on Russia and Turkey anymore.

Why India Is Weaning Itself Off Russian Barrels

The pressure from the United States appears to be having an impact. Here’s a look at what the data tells us about how quickly India is running out of Russian oil. India, for example, was importing approximately 1.2 million barrels a day in January and is projected to import just 800,000 a day by March.

India’s oil minister, Hardeep Singh Puri, said recently that the country is seeking out “new places” to purchase its oil. Many of India’s major oil companies have already slowed down or halted their purchases from Russia. In making the turn to Venezuela, India is hoping that Washington will at long last act to lower or remove its heavy tariffs on Indian business.

Chapter three

Choking Off the Money for War

This is not merely a typical business transaction; it’s part of a larger global strategy. The US wants to give Russia as few opportunities as possible to make money from its oil, which helps fund the continued war in Ukraine.

By providing Venezuela’s oil as an alternative, Washington spares India sufficient energy to power its economy while avoiding a situation that would see billions of dollars sent to Moscow. It’s a means of maintaining stability in global oil prices, while bleeding Russia dry through its bank account.

What Happens Next With This Energy Deal?

Although the offer is out there, the terms are still being worked out. It remains unclear how the oil will be sold, directly from Venezuela’s state company or through large international trading firms.

But it’s easy to see one thing: If India continues scraping away at Russian oil, a much better trade deal with the US is in reach. For New Delhi, the challenge in the coming months will be navigating between keeping down its energy costs and maintaining a strong relationship with Washington.
