Amazon Shifts AI Focus in Strategy Reset
Synopsis
The tech giant is reportedly deprecating several in-house AI models as it doubles down on frontier AI development.
Key Highlights
- Amazon shuts down most of its core Nova AI models as it overhauls its AI strategy.
- The firm is reallocating resources to a new frontier AI model headed up by researcher Pieter Abbeel.
- The new flagship is expected to debut at Amazon’s re:Invent conference later this year.
Amazon is overhauling its AI strategy and scaling back many of its in-house AI models to focus on a new frontier AI model. The company has started phasing out much of its premium Nova models, including the high-end Premier and Omni models, the Reel video-generation model and the Canvas image generation model.
Focus Shifts to Frontier AI
Amazon is putting a substantial amount of its resources toward frontier-model development led by researcher Pieter Abbeel according to the report, with frontier AI research becoming the first priority. The new flagship model is likely to debut at Amazon’s yearly re:Invent event this winter.
An Amazon spokesperson stated the company continues to evolve its AI portfolio over time based on customer needs, while continuing to support the Nova models that customers rely upon today, and investing in next-generation frontier AI research.
AGI Strategy Changes
Amazon’s strategy shift comes just days after it laid people off from its artificial general intelligence (AGI) group. The e-commerce giant said then that it’s focusing on initiatives that matter most to customers.
It had found it more difficult to create as much buzz around its hardware’s Nova models, targeting enterprise customers with an ongoing focus on AI infrastructure, compared to rivals OpenAI, Anthropic and Google.
According to a Business Insider report, Amazon remains committed to the Nova brand and its new frontier model could end up going under said label. Nova now includes Nova 2 Lite, Nova 2 Sonic and Nova Forge, a service allowing customers to come in to build their own AI models with it.
Amazon, which has more recently reshaped how it runs its AGI business, the division under cloud executive Peter DeSantis, saw several other senior AGI executives exit the company over the past year.
