Synopsis

Microsoft faces a potential US$190 billion market value swing after its earnings report as investors look for evidence that billions of dollars spent on AI are delivering results.

01
Chapter one

Key Highlights

  • Options traders are expecting about US$190 billion in Microsoft’s earnings report.
  • Options prices suggest a 6.6% shift in the share price, above the company’s historical average.
  • Investors are monitoring if Microsoft spending on AI pays off.

Option traders expect US$190 billion market value for Microsoft after the company reports its fourth-quarter results on Wednesday, as investors increasingly turn their attention to financial returns from the company’s artificial intelligence investments.

Options markets are implying a 6.6% share price move in either direction after the results. ORATS data show that Microsoft had an implied move of 4.8% and an actual move of 4.4% over the past 12 earnings cycles.

Chapter two

AI Spending Under Scrutiny

The higher expected move indicates the focus by investors on Microsoft, one of the key hyperscalers in AI investment.

As the AI rally fades, investors are doing due diligence on rising cost of capital. Hyperscalers are expected to spend more than they generate in free cash flow on capital expenditure by 2027. Shares of Microsoft are down 18.7% this year, compared with the S&P 500’s rise of 8.52%.

Its capital expenditure in fiscal Q3 increased 49% from a year earlier to US$31.9 billion, sliding back slightly from US$37.5 billion the previous quarter.

Investors will monitor whether Microsoft’s investments into AI are resulting in enhanced uptake from enterprises, in terms of Azure growth and the demand for its AI tooling.

Chapter three

Bullish Options Bets

But not all investors are souring on the stock, even in light of its recent weakness. As per Susquehanna, a trader paid nearly USD 10.4 million to purchase 20,000 call options in which he believes Microsoft shares will rise over $450 by August.

Traders also purchased 100,000 call options on the iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF to show confidence in both Microsoft and software stocks as earnings for the company approached alongside a new Federal Reserve meeting.

Chapter four

Meta Also in Focus

According to ORATS, options markets suggest a 7.8% shift in Meta shares following its earnings report on Wednesday compared with an average of a 7.3% implied move over the last twelve earnings cycles.

This quarter, investors will be focused on Meta’s advertising business, AI’s impact on user engagement and ad efficiency, and how well returns from its AI infrastructure spending justify the spend level.
