Ozzy Osbourne, one of the founding fathers of heavy metal music and longtime frontman of Black Sabbath, has died at the age of 76. His family confirmed that he passed away Tuesday morning, surrounded by loved ones at home. The news comes just over two weeks after Osbourne gave his final performance in his hometown of Birmingham, England. “It is with more sadness than words can say that we share Ozzy has passed away this morning,” said a statement from the Osbourne family. “He was with family and surrounded by love. We ask for privacy during this time.”
Health Struggles Didn’t Stop Him From Saying Goodbye to Fans
No official cause of death has been revealed, but Osbourne had been battling Parkinson’s disease since 2019. The illness has limited movements over the past few years, forcing him to cancel some of his issues. Still, he managed to perform one last time for his concert in Villa Park on July 5.
The show title Back to the Beginning reunited the Black Sabbath members, Ozzy, Toni Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward for the first time in two decades. Though Osbourne has to sing from a throne, the ground of 40,000 people roared with support. “You’ve no idea how I feel,” he told his fans. “Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
From Factory Worker to Metal Legend
Born Jack Michael Osborne in Birmingham in 1948, he rose from beginning to global fame. With the help of Black Sabbath in 1968, he changed the sound of rock music. Albums like Paranoid and Master of Reality shaped heavy metal and inspired degeneration of musicians. After leaving the band in 1979, he built a successful career with songs like “Crazy Train”. He sold over 100 million records and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Black Sabbath in 2006 and again as a solo artist in 2024.
