Terrible news from Australia shows how a phone company’s problems led to people dying when they couldn’t call for help. Optus, one of Australia’s biggest phone companies, had a major breakdown last week that stopped hundreds of people from calling emergency services for 13 hours. At least three people died because they couldn’t reach the help when they needed it most. The official says a fourth person also died from the same problem of not being able to connect.

The phone outage affects more than half of Australia, leaving people unable to make emergency calls in South Australia, Western Australia, and the Northern Territory. Some areas in New South Wales also lost their ability to call for help. More than 600 emergency calls failed to go through during this time, which means families couldn’t get ambulances, firefighters, or police when they desperately needed them.

The Company Waited Too Long To Tell People About Problems

What made people really angry about the situation was that Optus waited 40 hours before telling anyone about this serious issue. The company also didn’t tell government officials about the breakdown until after they fixed it, which goes against the rules about how companies should handle emergencies. This delay meant people kept trying to make emergency calls without knowing that their phones wouldn’t actually work.

Optus boss Stephen Rue finally admitted that the company made a huge mistake during a meeting with reporters on Friday. He said that the problem happened because of a technical error while they were trying to upgrade their network systems. The company says they didn’t even know about the problem for 13 hours, even though many customers were calling to complain that the phones weren’t working.

Government Promises Serious Punishment For Optus

Australian government officials are not happy about this situation and have made a promise that Optus will face punishment for letting people down. Australian communications minister Anika Wells said that phone companies have no excuse for emergency call failures and that she personally told the boss of the company how disappointed she was about the situation. Even the Australian Prime Minister suggested that the boss of Optus should think about quitting his job. As the company was involved in a similar situation two years back, they were fined AU$12 million.
