Hysata Secures A$49M ARENA Funding for A$98M Electrolyser Plant

Hysata has secured up to A$49 million from ARENA for a A$98 million Port Kembla electrolyser manufacturing project, supporting local production, skilled jobs and the expansion of Australia’s renewable hydrogen technology industry.
Australian hydrogen technology company Hysata has secured up to A$49 million from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency to establish a commercial-scale electrolyser manufacturing line at Port Kembla, New South Wales.
The funding will support a A$98 million project designed to produce 50 MW of electrolyser capacity annually, with the facility capable of scaling to 200 MW as demand grows.
The Hysata ARENA $49 million electrolyser plant is being funded through the Future Made in Australia Innovation Fund and marks another step in moving the company’s technology from research into large-scale manufacturing.
The project will manufacture Hysata’s capillary-fed electrolyser, a technology developed from research at the University of Wollongong.
ARENA says the system is designed to reduce the electricity required to produce renewable hydrogen which could help address one of the major costs facing the industry.
The project is also expected to create around 40 skilled jobs across manufacturing, engineering and technical roles in the Illawarra region.
From Port Kembla to Commercial Production
The Hysata Port Kembla facility will manufacture core electrolyser components, including membranes, anodes and cathodes, while also supporting early megawatt-scale commercial deployments. The company already has a manufacturing presence at Port Kembla, where ARENA says it employs around 120 people.
Hysata was founded in 2021 following research at the University of Wollongong. Its technology has since attracted substantial private investment, including a US$111 million Series B announced in 2024. In June 2026, Hysata also announced its first commercial megawatt-scale electrolyser order.
Building Australia’s Green Hydrogen Supply Chain
The project gives green hydrogen Australia ambitions a manufacturing component, with local production intended to strengthen domestic supply chains. Hysata will also work with the University of Wollongong and TAFE NSW Illawarra on training, internships and skills development.
The Future Made in Australia funding is therefore supporting more than equipment production. ARENA says the project is intended to build Australian capability in clean-energy manufacturing while creating a pathway for Hysata’s technology to reach larger domestic and international hydrogen projects.
