Young Outsider Beats Political Dynasty

Zohran Mamdani won the New York City mayoral race Tuesday night, marking a historic victory as the first Muslim mayor of the biggest city in America. The 34-year-old defeated former governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent and Republican candidate, and Curtis Sliwa.

Just months ago, hardly anyone knew Mamdani’s name, but he moved to victory with promises to help working people. Mamdani describes himself as a democratic socialist. He campaigned on promises to tax millionaires and use the revenue for programs to make life more affordable for everyday New Yorkers. His most popular ideas include free buses for all, universal child care and freezing rents in rent-controlled apartments.

Trump Made Threats Before the Election

President Donald Trump attacked Mamdani throughout the campaign, calling him a “communist” and threatening to cut federal funding to New York City if he won. During his victory speech, Mamdani spoke directly to Trump. “Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: turn the volume up,” Mamdani said as the crowd roared. “To get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us.”

Mamdani told the supporters that New York will stand up to Trump’s administration. “In this moment of political darkness, New York will be the light,” he said. The new mayor-elect promised to protect all New Yorkers, including immigrants and Jewish people facing antisemitism. He said the city which gave rise to Trump can also defeat him.

Promises Hope and Change

Mamdani used the word “hope” several times in his speech, much like Barack Obama did during his campaign years ago. “Today we have spoken in a clear voice: hope is alive,” Mamdani exclaimed as he took the stage at his campaign party before thousands of supporters. People screamed “Mashallah habibi”, an Arabic phrase meaning “god has willed it”, when he took the stage.

The new mayor thanked more than 100,000 volunteers who, he said, built his campaign into an unstoppable force. “Because of you, we will make this city one that working people can love and live in again,” he said. Mamdani got emotional, thanking his parents and wife Rama for their support. He told supporters that New Yorkers have been told for too long that power doesn’t belong in their hands.

Cuomo Graciously Concedes

Andrew Cuomo gave a concession speech in which he congratulated Mamdani, though some in his crowd booed. “That is not right,” Cuomo scolded his supporters. He pledged to help the city government in any way he could. Exit polls showed that if Republican Curtis Sliwa had dropped out, the race would have been much closer between Cuomo and Mamdani.

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, who endorsed Mamdani back in June, celebrated the win. After starting at just 1 per cent in early polls, Mamdani “pulled off one of the great political upsets in modern American history,” Sanders wrote. Famous supporters showed up at Mamdani’s party, including actress Cynthia Nixon, who once ran against Cuomo for governor.
