Oil prices dropped sharply after Israel confirmed it had agreed to a ceasefire with Iran. The move was followed by nearly 2 weeks of attacks, which shook global markets and drove up energy prices worldwide. Brent Crude, the international oil benchmark, fell by more than 5% slipping below $67 a barrel during the day.

Fears have been growing as Iran has approved blocking the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow but vital waterway that carries an important portion of the world's oil and gas. Any disruption there would directly affect global supply and raise prices further. The ceasefire has concerns for now.

Chapter one

Global Markets React Positively as Tension Eases

Stock markets in the US, Europe, and Asia responded positively to the ceasefire news. U.S. President Donald Trump had earlier taken to social media, urging Israel to retaliate further, accusing Iran of violating the peace agreement. This message, along with Israel’s confirmation of the ceasefire, helped bring some calm to the markets.

The S&P 500, Dow Jones, and NASDAQ in the US all closed more than 1% higher. In Europe, Germany’s tax rose 1.6% while the UK’s FTSE ended flat. In Asia, Japan, the Nikkei index went up by 1.1%. Energy stocks, which had gone up during the conflict, have been among the biggest fallers recently. Traders began to shift away from oil and gas, expecting lower prices in the short term of peace.

Chapter two

Gas Price Falls But Uncertainty Remains

Wholesale gas prices in the UK also dropped sharply by about 17% after going up earlier. Many of the gas supplies to the UK come from Qatar, which also depends on the Strait of Hormuz for transport. Missile attack by Iran on a US base in Qatar had raised more concerns, but the ceasefire has reduced some immediate risks.

Still, analysts say to remain cautious. The recent hike in oil prices has sparked fears of higher costs for everything from petrol and food to holidays. Many compare the situation to the energy crisis after Russia invaded Ukraine 3 years ago. If the truce continues, those fears may go away at least for now.

While markets around the world are breathing easy for now, the situation remains very crucial. Just hours after the ceasefire was declared, Iran accused Iran of breaking the agreement with another attack. So if this back-and-forth continues, oil prices could rise again quickly around the world.
