Belgium Makes Announcement

Belgium has announced it will recognize a Palestinian state in the United Nations General Assembly this month. Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot made the announcement, stating the move was being made in light of the humanitarian emergency in Gaza and on-going violence in Palestinian lands.

The action will follow other countries like France, Canada, Britain, and Australia that have also committed to supporting Palestinian statehood. Prevot explained that Belgium would sign the New York Declaration, calling for a two-state solution, in which Palestine and Israel coexist peacefully next to each other.

Sanctions on Israel

In addition to the recognition, Belgium will impose 12 sanctions on Israel. Some of them include prohibiting imports of Israeli settlement-made products, examining contracts with Israeli firms, and preventing leaders of Hamas from entering Belgium. Prevot explained that the actions were intended to send a message of disapproval against Israel’s settlement growth and military interventions in the occupied lands.

The European Union is still at variance over the matter, with some of its member countries advocating for firm action against Israel, while others are against. Nevertheless, Belgium indicated that it too would collaborate with France and Saudi Arabia in a broader diplomatic effort to urge peace and rebuilding in Palestine.

Global Reactions

The move is likely to put more pressure on Israel, which has been sternly resisting the moves. The United States has been claiming Palestinian statehood is possible only through direct negotiations with both parties. Washington also recently banned Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas from attending the upcoming UN summit in New York.

Israel, on the other hand, has been mulling over annexing areas of the West Bank in response to increased recognition of Palestine by various nations. The United Nations and the rest of the world deem Israel’s occupation of Palestinian lands illegal, although Israel does not agree.
