Heavy Rains and Floods Cause Death and Destruction in Beijing
Heavy rains have been affecting very much in northern China for some days. At least 30 individuals have lost their lives due to floods in Beijing. Over 80,000 individuals have been relocated to safety as rescue workers attempt to access water-cut-off villages. Several regions around the city lack electricity, and roads are cut off.
President Xi Jinping has urged rescue workers to do all that they can to save lives and prevent further deaths. Helicopters and boats are employed to rescue the stranded. The officials explained that the heavy downpour would hit again later in the week, which has left people even anxious.
People Are Finding It Hard to Flee And Most Villages Remain at Risk
The floods have affected villages in the Miyun district of Beijing the most. The families are not able to reach their loved ones as the floods have destroyed phone networks and electricity. Residents have reported seeing water suddenly appear, engulfing cars and houses.
People have been rescued by rescue teams from buildings and fed and supplied by helicopters. Clips on Beijing television depict cars drifting in water and rescuers swimming through neck-deep floodwaters. At one nursing home, the elderly were evacuated one at a time.
More Rains and a Typhoon To Worsen Conditions
As Beijing battles floods, southern China and Hong Kong are also bracing for heavy rain. Hong Kong raised its highest rainstorm warning earlier in the week, and a new typhoon is now heading toward areas south of Beijing.
Meanwhile, areas in central and eastern China are experiencing extremely hot temperatures, nearly reaching 40°C. This combination of heat and storms has rendered life extremely difficult for residents nationwide. Authorities have already distributed millions of yuan to repair roads, offer shelter, and deliver food and water to the residents who lost their homes.
