U.S. Oil Prices Drop Sharply After Trump Confirms Israel-Iran Ceasefire
Oil prices dropped sharply on Tuesday following a ceasefire deal between Iran and Israel announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, calming some worried markets over escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, fell by $2.69, or almost 4%, to $68.79 per barrel. During the day, it had fallen more than 4% to a low since June 11. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude also fell sharply, losing $2.70, or almost 4%, to $65.46 per barrel. This was its lowest since June 9.
The decline follows an even steeper collapse of oil prices yesterday, when both futures had closed more than 7% below. Oil prices had reached five-month highs just days ago, after the U.S. had begun strikes on Iran's nuclear sites. Fears at the time were that the ongoing war between Iran and Israel would further intensify and result in severe disruption to the supply of oil.
Ceasefire Brings Relief to Energy Markets
On Monday, President Trump announced on his Truth Social site that Israel and Iran had agreed to a ceasefire. Under the terms, according to him, Iran would cease its attacks immediately, and Israel would follow 12 hours later. If the two nations adhere to the agreement, the war will officially be over in 24 hours.
Trump labelled the deal as a "complete and total" ceasefire, seeking to end the 12-day war. The news hit oil markets immediately, which had been factoring in the risk of a long war and potential disruption to oil shipping lanes.
Iran's Role in Global Oil Supply
Iran is a leading oil producer in the world and the third-largest member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). Any indication of unrest with Iran tends to rattle oil prices, particularly if there's a threat to the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial shipping lane for oil exported from the Middle East.
With tensions now having eased, traders are confident that Iran will be in a position to export oil without any problems. This went a long way in reducing the risk factor in the oil market and resulted in the steep plunge in prices. Although the ceasefire is only recent, and most will wait and watch whether it endures or not, the mood in the market is definitely more subdued today compared to just a few days ago.
