Hundreds of arrests have been conducted by Los Angeles police as they crack down on demonstrators who violated a new night-time curfew in downtown LA. The arrests were performed on the fifth day of protest rallies against federal immigration raids in the city.
LA Mayor Karen Bass imposed a curfew between 8 pm and 6 am over a single square mile of downtown LA. She explained that the step was taken to prevent looting and destruction of local businesses following several days of unrest.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) made "mass arrests" immediately after the implementation of a curfew in a small section of the city enacted by Mayor Karen Bass. Police reported close to 200 individuals had been arrested on Tuesday, compared to 27 individuals arrested on Saturday, 40 on Sunday, and 114 on Monday.
Police Use Force to Clear Streets
Horse-mounted police rode through the city center streets, forcing back groups of demonstrators. Rubber bullets were fired by police as they cleared the area block by block. A protester has just rushed past, displaying a big weld on his chest, said a BBC reporter on the ground.
The curfew applies to only a small portion of LA - roughly one square mile of the city's 502 square miles. But the district has been hard hit, with the mayor reporting that businesses lost millions of dollars.
Protests Spread to Other Cities
The LA protests news reveals the demonstrations have now spread to at least 10 other US cities. Immigration raids protests have spread from Los Angeles to New York to several cities in Texas. New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, and San Francisco are among the cities that have experienced protests.
In New York, there were a number of arrests, but the police claimed the protests were generally peaceful. Texas has responded differently, with Governor Greg Abbott deploying National Guard soldiers to where protests are scheduled to take place.
President Trump deployed 4,000 National Guard soldiers and 700 Marines to aid the crisis in LA. President Trump was criticised by California Governor Gavin Newsom for deploying the National Guard. He termed it a "brazen abuse of power". The curfew should last several days as officials attempt to restore order in downtown LA, as the immigration enforcement operations are maintained.
