James Gunn’s Superman film has not just stirred excitement for comic book fans, but it’s also sparked a heartwarming trend across America. The film's unexpected screen stealer, Krypto the Superdog, is driving a nationwide surge in dog adoption, with Google searches for “adoption dog near me” going over 500% since the film's promotional rollout started.
And it’s not just an online curiosity. In a campaign related to the film release, Warner Bros and best friends Animal Society helped 454 dogs and cats find loving homes before opening weekend.
A Terrier Mutt with Superpowers
Krypto’s new look is winning the hearts of people around the world. Unlike past versions of the character shown as a polished Labrador or Shepherd, this 2025 film reimagines Krypto as a Terrier-Schnauzer mix. He has a hairy beard, a small frame, and a chaotic charm that is created directly after James’s own rescue dog, Ozu.
Gunn adopted Ozu from a hoarding situation while writing this Superman script. His energy inspired the director to wonder, “What if this little menace has its own superpowers?” That simple question became the foundation for the most valuable and lovable character. As a result, the search for an “adopt schnauzer” has risen over 300% in just days, as fans look for their own version of the heroic pup.
More Than A Movie
This Krypto craze goes beyond marketing. Warner Bros partnered with the Best Friends Animal Society for a nationwide adoption push. From July 1-10, the studio covered adoption fees at the key shelters across America, including New York, Los Angeles, and Salt Lake City.
In a heartfelt PSA, Gunn urged his fans to be someone’s zero and consider adoption. He credits Ozu with transforming his own life. He said, “There are so many pets out there just waiting for a family to make their lives complete, like Ozu also makes ours.”

It’s not just Krypto’s personality that comes from Ozu; his entire design is an animated model after him. Gunn’s team used hundreds of clips of Ozu playing, fighting, and even biting his feet to animate movements. The final digital dog has Ozu’s body, but the classic white coat as a nod to the comics.
