CBS has confirmed that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will come to an end in May 2026. The network will not look for a new host but will shut down the entire late-night franchise. The announcement comes as the network faces major financial pressure with advertising revenue for the late-night TV sector falling from $800 million in 2014 to just $42 million in 2022.
In a joint segment, a CBS executive said, the decision was purely financial and not related to Colbert’s performance or the content of the show. The network previously ended The Late Late Show following James Corden’s departure, citing similar budget concerns. “The financial landscape has changed drastically,” one executive said. “The economics of late-night no longer make sense the way they used to.”
Colbert Leaves Behind Top-Rater Legacy
Stephen Colbert took over the show in 2015 after David Letterman’s retirement. Earlier, he faced a lot of doubt about switching from his Comedy Central persona, but later he found his ground on the show. From 2017 onwards, The Late Show became the highest-rated late-night program in America for seven seasons, driven by Colbert’s political commentary and loyal viewer base.
Colbert’s point of view on current events, especially during the Trump presidency, made the show a ritual. He won multiple Emmy awards, helped launch spin-offs like Out of the News and put his production company Spartina into the Spotlight. CBS called him irreplaceable, saying, “We’re proud he called CBS home.”
End of An Era
Colbert told this news to his audience during a taping on July 17, 2025. “It's not just the end of our show,” he said, “It’s the end of the late show on CBS. This is all just going away.” The audience reacted with surprise and sadness. This marks the end of CSS as a late night on that, when David Letterman moved to the network from NBC in 1993. With Colbert’s exit, the chapter of The Late Show will officially come to an end.
