Synopsis

The new generative AI tool, developed by Meta Superintelligence Labs, enables users to create images from text prompts and will be available free across the company's platforms.

Meta launched an AI image generator tool, Meta Muse, expanding its use of AI throughout its family of apps as the company faces increasing competition in generative AI. Made by its Meta Superintelligence Labs, the model generates and edits images from text prompts, photo uploads, and sketches directly within Meta AI.

The rollout began in early July with image generation being introduced in specific countries via Meta AI in WhatsApp, before being progressively rolled out across Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger.

Meta states there is no scheduled release date for Australia and other regions.

Additionally, the company shared over 30 AI-powered visual effects for Instagram Stories that are powered by Meta Muse.

Rollout Adds New AI Tools Across Meta Platforms

The Meta Muse AI image generator enables the creation of images from written commands and provides editing capabilities like drawing to add or remove content. The tool's basic image creation feature will remain free, with more advanced creative functions available through its subscription services.

In conjunction with the image generator announcement, Meta also shared an initial look at an AI model for creating short videos from text, known as Muse Video.

Meta's in-house testing suggests Muse Image's prompt accuracy is on par with several other leading image generation models yet to be released.

AI Investment Continues to Increase

The company continues to increase its investment in AI infrastructure, reporting US$56.3 billion in sales for the first quarter of 2026, up 33% from the previous year. It also increased its 2026 capital expenditure estimate by 20% to between US$125 billion and US$145 billion, primarily for AI data centers and compute power.

Investment in AI is gaining traction globally, with widespread enterprise adoption in North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific driving up AI spending. IDC projects the global AI spending market to reach US$630 billion by 2028.

As AI-generated content becomes increasingly commonplace, the proliferation of AI image tools like Meta Muse is poised to offer Australian businesses more options for content creation through Meta's advertising products such as Advantage+.
