Amazon’s chief executive, Andy Jassy, has delivered a stark message to employees: Artificial intelligence will soon reduce many corporate positions at the company. In a company-wide memo, Jassy urged staff to embrace AI technology while acknowledging it would lead to workforce reductions.
The warning comes as Amazon joins other major tech companies in being upfront about AI’s impact on employment. Jassy told employees they should be cautious about AI, even as he predicted that the technology would create efficiency gains that would reduce the need for human employees.
“We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs,” Jassy wrote in the memo. He admitted it’s not clear exactly how the numbers will balance out, but expects the overall corporate workforce to reduce in the near term.
Tech Industry Faces Widespread Job Displacement
Amazon isn’t alone in this AI dependency. Other tech leaders have been sounding similar alarms about the technology’s impact on employment, mainly for entry-level office workers.
Dario Amodie, who runs AI company Anthropic, recently said that AI could eliminate up to half og all entry-level white-collar positions. Even more concerning, Geoffrey Hinton, often called the “Godfather of AI” for his work at Google, believes this technological shift is fundamentally different from other automation waves.
Hinton argues that, unlike part innovations that made new job categories to replace those lost, AI’s ability to handle all basic human tasks makes it harder to see where new opportunities will emerge. He suggests that only highly skilled workers will find roles that AI cannot perform.
Amazon’s AI Integration Accelerates
The scale of potential job losses at Amazon is significant given the company’s massive workforce. With over 1.5 million employees worldwide, Amazon ranks as America’s second-largest employer after Walmart. While most workers are in warehouses, about 350,000 people work in office roles that could be affected by AI.
Jassy revealed that Amazon is already deploying AI in virtually every corner of the company. He conveyed a future where AI agents handle routine tasks like shopping and daily chores, telling employees that these automated systems are coming fast.
The company has already seen substantial adoption of its AI tools among business partners. Half a million sellers on the Amazon platform are using the company’s AI to generate product descriptions and marketing materials, while advertisers are increasingly turning to automated solutions for their campaigns.
Despite job-reducing warnings, Jassy suggests that employees who adapt to working with AI will find themselves in a much stronger position within the company.
