Meta Faces US Push for AI Model Testing as Security Concerns Grow
U.S. officials have asked Meta to allow voluntary reviews of its AI models to assess their capabilities and vulnerabilities, the New York Times reported, marking a broader push by the Trump administration to increase oversight of the AI industry.
Facebook's parent company Meta is also being urged by the Trump administration to sign up for a voluntary federal initiative that would give government officials permission to review advanced AI systems before they're deployed.
The reviews, the New York Times said, are intended to assess the capabilities and examine potential risks in advanced AI models including their limitations and implications for national security.
Meta is now the only prominent U.S.-based AI development firm that has yet to subscribe to the government’s request; OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, xAI, and Anthropic have all agreed to provide the federal government early access to their frontier models for testing and analysis.
Meta has declared that it favors the White House in the pursuit of the development of AI in a safer manner and anticipates striking a deal at a future date.
Growing focus on AI oversight
Earlier this month, the U.S. government ordered Anthropic to suspend access to its most advanced AI models for foreign nationals, citing national security concerns as scrutiny of advanced AI systems continues to grow.
The framework from which this program emerges was part of executive action signed by former President of the United States, Donald Trump, on June 2, establishing a process to be used voluntarily by government agencies to test out AI technology for the space of one month prior to its public rollout, this move was influenced by national security.
Government concerns over security impact
The Trump administration’s action toward the evaluation of AI, stems from an intensified watchfulness over state-of-the-art AI technology in Washington.
This most recent call places pressure on Meta to participate, as its recently deployed artificial intelligence model named Muse Spark AI earlier this year, now joins that list of firms contributing to a government oversight and accountability initiative.
