Synopsis

The chipmaker is reportedly considering financing guarantees for OpenAI's $250 billion data centre project to secure long-term AI chip demand.

Nvidia is said to be contemplating a $250 billion financing guarantee for OpenAI's massive artificial intelligence data center campus located in Ohio, which could be instrumental in providing capital for one of the largest AI infrastructure investments proposed so far.

The negotiations are still ongoing and a final agreement has yet to be reached, according to reports.

The proposed guarantee would make OpenAI more attractive to lenders by lowering financing risk. To be developed by SB Energy, a subsidiary of SoftBank, the project will offer as much as 10 gigawatts (GW) of computing power when completed.

The overall cost of the development, covering the AI chips as well as related infrastructure, is valued at more than $500 billion.

Nvidia is also reportedly separately negotiating a financing deal that would allow it to sell up to $350 billion in AI processors for the project.

Chapter one

Major AI Infrastructure Investment

The Ohio campus is being developed at a former site for the enrichment of uranium, and current federal approval for that facility may help fast-track the construction of the Ohio campus.

The first phase is projected to provide approximately 800 megawatts of capacity by 2028, and electricity will be allocated by U.S. authorities.

The reported talks are indicative of the investment needed for more sophisticated AI systems, which rely on large data centers with powerful processors and robust power supplies.

The trend of AI investment is also showing potential for opportunities in other sectors, including Australian businesses that provide energy, engineering, construction and digital infrastructure services.

Chapter two

Growing Global Competition

The United States is still the biggest market for AI data centers, with countries such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Japan and France, as well as South Korea, announcing significant investments to build more domestic computing power in the last twelve months.

AI computing capacity is evolving into a strategic asset for technology advancement and economic development, as governments increasingly recognize it as a crucial element of this sector.

IDC's Worldwide AI and Generative AI Spending Guide projects $644 billion for global spending on AI in 2025, as investments continue in infrastructure, software and services with AI capabilities. The need for more powerful AI chips has been a key driver of this growth.

Nvidia has been one of the top beneficiaries of the AI infrastructure revolution. The company's data center business was the biggest contributor to revenue, accounting for $193.7 billion in reported revenue, followed by $21.4 billion from its digital advertising business and $20.7 billion from its other business line.

It is not clear if the financing talks have been confirmed by either Nvidia or OpenAI, nor has there been any official word on the proposed structure.
