Nadella Says AI Dependence Threatens Businesses
Synopsis
Companies that trust one AI platform for everything may not survive, Microsoft's CEO warned, urging firms to adopt multi-model strategies.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella expressed concerns that having all of the AI workload within a single provider will inevitably decrease their long term competitive ability. He said companies shouldn't allow all knowledge obtained from using AI throughout the day to become owned by just one service provider.
With enterprises, Nadella explained that with all the prompt and correction and workflow that’s shared to an AI, it all builds on part of the organization’s institutional knowledge and it becomes a strategic asset for business entities, and organizations should have the ability to retain it.
Enterprise AI Moves Beyond Model Selection
According to Nadella, organizations should build 'AI systems'that can be leveraged across several models rather than with a single provider to take advantage of bringing the intelligence of organizations' own expertise, operating practices, and data along with multiple AI models in an ever changing requirement based fashion.
His comments come at a time of increased and rapid AI deployment in businesses as companies continue to leverage AI across software development, customer service, finance, cybersecurity and office productivity.
AI is now becoming deeply integrated into business operations and data security, governance and intellectual property are becoming increasingly important considerations, given the rapidly expanding investment into AI globally. Data is becoming the strategic asset for business.
Global AI Investment Continues to Grow
The Stanford Human-Centered AI Artificial Intelligence Index report 2026 identified that private investment has soared in 2025 whereas adoption of AI at the enterprise level is steady in large economies like US, China and Europe which are leading in developing the AI models.
It is now not a question of model but rather a system that works across models. Industry uptake is also on the rise. According to the State of AI 2025 report, AI use in majority organizations reached 78% this year from 72% a year ago which indicates widespread adoption of AI.
In fact, Microsoft is also showing growth in its AI business and generated $82.9 Billion from cloud and AI business along with $31.8 Billion net income for March 31, 2026 quarter and annual revenue run rate now $37 billion.
Nadella's comments are relevant after queries in US, Australia and few other countries regarding the handling of the enterprise data by AI service providers.
As companies move at high speed in integrating AI into business operations. It is increasingly critical that enterprises think about ownership of proprietary data, approaches to knowledge and flexibility of technology.
