Billions Flow Into Neoclouds as Nvidia Expands AI Strategy
Synopsis
Investors are betting on specialised AI cloud providers to compete with hyperscalers, though questions remain over the long-term sustainability of the sector.
Key Highlights
- Nvidia has announced its Nvidia neoclouds AI Compute Partnership with Sharon AI and Firmus Technologies as some of the first partners.
- Gives Nvidia the ability to rent out unused GPUs from neocloud providers in exchange for a percentage of revenue
- The move comes as global investment freezes neocloud companies.
Nvidia revealed its Nvidia AI Compute Partnership, with Sharon AI and Firmus Technologies among the initial group of partners that helps deepen its relationship with the fast-growing neocloud world. The move also underscores the Australian connection, an ASX-linked sovereign cloud provider is preparing to list Sharon AI (ASX), one for the prospector.
Using the program, Nvidia will lease unused graphics processing from neocloud providers in exchange for a portion of their profits as financial assistance if verifiable demand turns out to be less than expected.
Investment in Neoclouds Accelerates
Neoclouds vs hyperscaler is rapidly gaining popularity among major investors. Looking likely to be a serious player, Japanese investment giant SoftBank set up a neocloud-specialist subsidiary while AI-focused hedge fund Situational Awareness led by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner and trustee Janet Donaldson filed to take a 19.9% stake in Sharon AI, making it the largest single shareholder in that company.Additional Info
Other Australian neocloud companies Sharon AI and Firmus Technologies have also received backing from some major investment firms, including Blackstone and Coatue Management Oaktree Capital Management.
Nvidia Responds to Growing Competition
Nvidia GPU financing program is almost universally viewed as a defensive move in response to rising competition from hyperscale cloud providers like Microsoft, Amazon and Alphabet that are designing their own AI chips.
Nvidia is looking to expand AI computing capacity beyond the traditional hyperscalers by accessing neocloud operators. While the demand for independent AI infrastructure is already demonstrated by companies such as CoreWeave and Nebius, Sharon AI Firmus Technologies GPUs are destined to intensify their pace of intervention as the sector scales.
