AI Duo Walks Away from Bezos-Backed Project to Build Model that Processes 5T Data Points

Two researchers who were once approached to help lead Jeff Bezos-backed AI venture Project Prometheus have launched their own company with an AI model designed not for language but for understanding the physical world.
Anima Anandkumar and Benedikt Jenik, co-founders of Accelerated Understanding Inc, say their system processed 5 trillion pieces of data in a single prompt during testing.
That is roughly five million times the context size typically available in leading models from companies such as Anthropic and Google.
Rather than predicting the next word like conventional AI systems such as ChatGPT, the model is designed to predict physical phenomena across space and time.
AI Designed Around Physics
The company has moved away from the Transformer architecture that underpins many leading generative AI systems. Instead, it uses technology based on neural operators, an area Anandkumar helped advance during her time at Nvidia.
The founders believe the approach could have applications in semiconductor design, robotics, extreme-weather forecasting and energy.
In chip manufacturing, for example, the system could help determine how materials and temperatures affect performance, potentially reducing the amount of physical trial and error required in laboratories.
Accelerated Understanding is initially targeting enterprise customers rather than consumers. It has a goal of providing one system capable of handling different physics-related problems rather than requiring separate mathematical models for each application.
From Bezos’ Prometheus to a Solo Venture
The company’s launch comes after Anandkumar and Jenik were considered for prominent roles at Project Prometheus, the AI venture co-founded by Bezos and biotech entrepreneur Vik Bajaj.
A 2024 proposal offered Anandkumar a scientific leadership role and the couple a combined 35% stake, alongside annual compensation that could have reached $2 million. The proposal also outlined more than $2 billion in committed funding through Series B.
The researchers ultimately continued building their own company. Prometheus later raised a $12 billion Series B in June 2026 to develop AI for automating the manufacturing of complex physical systems.
Nvidia Connection
Anandkumar previously spent five years as an Nvidia director and joined the chipmaker in 2018, leading research into AI applications for GPUs.
Her work on neural operators demonstrated how AI could accelerate weather prediction, attracting CEO Jensen Huang’s attention. That research helped shape the thinking behind Accelerated Understanding’s current approach.
The company has not disclosed its funding or named the computing providers supplying hardware clusters for its models.
