The news was first reported by Bloomberg. Sony later confirmed the decision.
Bluepoint Games, founded in 2006 and based in Austin, was acquired by Sony Interactive Entertainment in 2021 and became part of PlayStation Studios. The company did not disclose the number of employees affected.
Studio Known for Major PlayStation Remakes
Bluepoint built its reputation by remastering and rebuilding well-known titles for newer PlayStation consoles. It developed the 2020 remake of Demon’s Souls for the PlayStation 5 and the 2018 remake of Shadow of the Colossus for PlayStation 4. The studio also worked on collections such as Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and contributed to PlayStation projects including God of War Ragnarök.
After its acquisition, Bluepoint had been working on an original title. That project was later canceled as part of broader internal changes.
Industry Pressures and Strategic Shift
The closure comes during a period of restructuring within Sony’s gaming division. Sony Interactive Entertainment has been reassessing its investment in live-service games, which are designed to generate ongoing revenue through online content and updates. Several such projects have been scaled back or canceled in recent months.
According to Sony Group’s latest financial results, the company reported revenue of approximately ¥13 trillion (about $87 billion) for the fiscal year ended March 2025. Its Game & Network Services segment, which includes the PlayStation business, remains one of Sony’s largest revenue contributors.
Across the wider video game industry, publishers have faced rising development costs, longer production timelines and slower growth compared with pandemic-era demand. Multiple game studios globally have announced layoffs or closures over the past year.
Sony did not announce additional closures alongside Bluepoint Games.
