GTA VI Pre-Orders Smash Expectations as Take-Two Holds Guidance

Take-Two Interactive says demand for Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI) has reached unprecedented levels, reinforcing expectations that the blockbuster title could become one of the biggest entertainment launches in history.
Speaking after the company's quarterly earnings, CEO Strauss Zelnick said pre-orders which opened on June 25, had exceeded anything the publisher or the wider gaming industry had previously experienced.
Even so, the company maintained its full-year bookings forecast, with Zelnick stressing that no units had yet been sold and pre-orders could still be cancelled. Investors nevertheless welcomed the update, sending Take-Two shares more than 4% higher in trading.
The excitement surrounding GTA VI comes after years of development delays and more than a decade after the release of Grand Theft Auto V. Analysts expect the new title to generate billions of dollars within days of launch, making it a defining release for Take-Two's financial performance over the coming quarters.
GTA Franchise Remains Take-Two's Biggest Growth Engine
The publisher is looking to build on the extraordinary success of GTA V that has sold more than 230 million copies worldwide since its launch in 2013 which makes it one of the best-selling video games ever.
Investors are also watching for details about the future of the franchise's online multiplayer experience which has become a long-term revenue driver through in-game purchases and recurring player spending.
That recurring revenue model has become increasingly valuable across the gaming industry. Publishers now rely on live-service titles to generate income well beyond an initial game's release.
Forecast Reflects Cautious Approach
Despite the strong response from players, Take-Two left its fiscal 2027 bookings forecast unchanged at US$8 billion to US$8.2 billion. The company said it preferred to wait for actual sales before raising expectations. Analysts surveyed by LSEG had projected bookings of US$8.86 billion.
For the quarter ended June 30, Take-Two reported net bookings of US$1.39 billion which is slightly ahead of market estimates. However, its outlook for the current quarter fell below analyst expectations, reflecting a lighter release schedule outside GTA and slowing momentum in parts of its mobile gaming portfolio.
With GTA VI scheduled for release in November, analysts expect the title to dominate Take-Two's results through the remainder of the fiscal year. Its commercial performance is also likely to influence broader trends across the global video game industry where blockbuster releases continue to shape consumer spending and publisher earnings.
