Europe EV Sales Surge 13.6% as Electric Cars Capture 25.7% of July Market

European EV sales jumped 13.6% year-on-year in July, with battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) accounting for 224,266 registrations in 16 major markets. Fully electric cars claimed 25.7% of total new car sales in the latest update from E-Mobility Europe and New Automotive and Fier Automotive.
Registrations of battery electric vehicles in Europe hit 1.5 million units in the first 7 months of 2026, compared to 1.15 million the same period last year, an increase of 30%. Growth was driven by the French and German markets, which registered 44,378 and 78,609 battery electric cars, respectively.
France, Germany Lift July Registrations
In terms of percentage, 35% of all vehicles sold in France were battery electric and 29.3% of those sold in Germany were battery electric. The countries with the highest new car sales were Germany and Italy in July.
According to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) New Car Registrations: +5.7% in H1 2026; battery-electric 20.7% market share, in the first half of this year, adoption of BEVs jumped from 15.6% to 20.7% year-on-year in the EU.
France saw a 62.9% rise while Germany registered 48% growth in the first half of 2026, compared to the same period last year. These four markets accounted for 63% of overall EU battery car sales, with Denmark reporting the highest growth at 41.2% followed by Belgium at 8.2%.
Large Gap Between European Markets
The figures for the sale of electric vehicles in Europe continue to be high, with some markets outperforming others. Battery-electric vehicle sales in Denmark remained the highest among EU countries with 80.1% of all new car sales being fully electric in July. Finland, the Netherlands, Belgium and Sweden followed with 52.6%, 47.3%, 42.8% and 42.6%, respectively.
The figure for Italy, for example, fell to 5.9% from 10.1% in the previous month, following the end of incentives for electric vehicle buyers in the country. In Poland it was 4% and 7.5% in the Czech Republic.
According to ACEA, petrol and diesel accounted for 29.7% of total passenger-car registrations in the first half of 2026 against 37.8% in the same period last year. Hybrid-electric vehicles claimed 37.3 per cent of powertrain market share.
The figures for July provide a useful insight into the dynamics of the EV market for Australian and US-based firms seeking to understand the diverse global automotive sector. The disparity between the country figures highlights just how broad the appeal for battery electric vehicles can be.
