US Court Approves $2.5B PFAS Settlement With DuPont, 3M

A U.S. federal judge has approved more than $2.5 billion in settlements for New Jersey and DuPont, Chemours, Corteva and 3M for alleged PFAS contamination.
The deals concern contracts with the state over contamination of water and other resources with PFAS - various chemicals used in consumer and industrial products. The ruling came on August 7, 2026, when the court approved the settlements.
DuPont Deal Includes $1.2 Billion Cleanup Fund
The largest part of the U.S. PFAS settlement, $875 million, is related to DuPont, Chemours and Corteva’s liabilities for natural resource damage and other damages for the release of the toxic chemicals, which is set to be paid off during 25 years.
The companies have to clean up four abandoned industrial sites and have to create a $1.2 billion remediation account. If the companies don't fulfill their responsibilities, DuPont and Corteva will establish another $475 million fund for the clean-up.
The other part of the deal with 3M is related to the contamination of the drinking water sources and stipulates $ $400 million to $450 million for the 25-year payment period. The settlements come after years of litigation between the chemical companies and states over the toxic “forever” chemicals.
PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are used in a variety of industries and consumer goods, from cosmetics to non-stick cookware and waterproof clothing. The chemicals are extremely persistent in the environment and the human body, which is why they are also called “forever” chemicals.
Financial Impact Comes Alongside Ongoing Litigation
The deal comes as both companies report record profits. In the second quarter of 2026, 3M’s revenue reached $ $6.5 billion, an increase of 2.4% compared to 2025. 3M also had net costs of $440 million, with $1 billion allocated for major litigation and PFAS liabilities during the period.
In the first quarter of 2026, DuPont’s net sales reached $ $1.68 billion, a 4% increase from the previous year. The company had anticipated a $1.8 billion for the second consecutive quarter before the Aug. 4, 2026 report.
The New Jersey case is just one of the potential PFAS-related lawsuits. The state is also suing DuPont, Chemours, Corteva and 3M for their role in PFAS contamination, and New York filed a similar lawsuit against the companies in July 2026.
