Synopsis

Thousands of customers across Australia reported losing mobile connectivity, while Telstra said it was working to restore affected calls and data services.

Australia's biggest telecoms firm, Telstra, has announced that it has reinstated the majority of mobile services after a nationwide outage on Wednesday morning caused travel, payments and critical communications to be disrupted in various parts of the country.

The outage started just after 3 a.m. AEST and impacted customers on the Telstra mobile network, including those on the networks of mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) Belong, Boost Mobile, ALDI Mobile and Superloop. All users in major cities were unable to call, access mobile data or services that depended on the carrier's network.

Fixed-line broadband connection, such as the National Broadband Network (NBN), was available, but authorities urged people who needed emergency services to call on landlines or Wi-Fi calling the Triple Zero (000) number where possible.

Telstra later said it had been conducting its normal welfare checks and investigating a small number of failed emergency call attempts during the outage.

Transport and Payment Systems Affected

The outage wasn't confined to mobile messaging though, impacting transportation and payment functions in several states. Victoria's V/Line regional train network shut down operations as it uses the Telstra mobile network, while Transport for NSW said it was experiencing delays on the Hunter Line, Southern Highlands services and on routes between Sydney and Canberra.

Retailers, hospitality establishments and taxi businesses also had trouble making electronic payments, with the loss of Telstra's EFTPOS terminals. Payment provider Tyro admitted some of its terminals were impacted during the upset.

Several EV charging stations powered by electricity that were connected via Telstra also suffered from service disruptions, which temporarily reduced charging capacity for drivers.

Network Fault Raises Reliability Questions

By mid-morning Telstra had announced it had restored about 90 per cent of the impacted mobile services, and blamed the outage on a problem with a timing system in its mobile network.

Later the company explained that the problem stemmed from timing server fault issues at its Sydney and Melbourne data centres. There was no sign the disruption came from a cyber attack or malicious activity and engineers are continuing to work to restore all other services, Telstra said.

The event has brought into sharp focus the importance of Australian communications technology and the critical role mobile telecommunications plays for transport, emergency communications and digital payments.

The impact of the outage was significant, with the Australian Communications and Media Authority reporting over 34 million mobile services were active in the country in 2025, and Telstra reporting the top 100,000 of its retail mobile services were impacted during the outage in its half-year results for fiscal 2026.
