Anthropic Wants to Put a Medical AI in Every Doctor’s Pocket

Anthropic and OpenEvidence will extend clinical AI to about 100 countries, with OpenEvidence adapting the system to local healthcare conditions and resources.
AI startup Anthropic and medical knowledge platform OpenEvidence partnership will provide AI-powered decision support to healthcare providers in around 100 countries, including those where physicians have limited access to medical literature and other forms of specialist expertise.
The companies plan to offer the service to providers free of charge in the countries that have joined the Anthropic OpenEvidence partnership. OpenEvidence will be underpinned by peer-reviewed clinical research and treatment guidelines that address doctors' medical queries, while Anthropic will oversee the technology.
From Sudan to Mongolia
OpenEvidence offers a list of countries that have joined the Anthropic OpenEvidence partnership, which include Uganda, Angola, Sudan, Haiti and Mongolia.
Uganda and Sudan are currently considered low-income countries by the World Bank. Angola and Haiti are lower-middle income countries and Mongolia is upper-middle income.
According to OpenEvidence, there were 42M consultations with its platform by US clinicians in August. The company has been working with health agencies in Rwanda and Botswana to adapt the product to variations in disease prevalence, medical infrastructure, diagnostic capabilities and treatment options.
OpenEvidence will roll out the system in various regions, not apply it to all countries that have joined the Anthropic OpenEvidence partnership as a single system.
Healthcare Workforce Shortage Adds Context
Coming after a shortage of physicians and other health workers in various countries. The World Health Organization (WHO) forecasts a shortage of 11.1 million health workers across the world by 2030, compared to an earlier projection of 10.2 million.
In addition, the Anthropic OpenEvidence partnership fits in with Anthropic's push into healthcare and life sciences. In September, Anthropic launched a Life Sciences Verification Program for firms engaged in drug discovery, research biology and clinical development, among others.
At the end of July, the annual revenue run rate for Anthropic was over $65 billion by Reuters, up from $47 billion in May, and would be around $9 billion at the end of 2025.
The deal value was not disclosed. OpenEvidence is currently used, free of charge, by clinicians in the United States and Europe.
