Uber plans to deploy 500 and vehicles around the world this year, which will have sensors to gather information for its growing automated vehicle network

Key Highlights

  • In 2026, Uber will dispatch at least 500 automobiles for data collection.
  • The fleet will collect approximately 2 million miles of driving data every month.
  • The vehicles, built to partner with self-driving vehicle companions.
  • The initiative is being undertaken by Uber under its recently formed AV Labs division.
  • The firm is taking its self-driving vehicle strategy international.

Uber to roll out new data collection fleet to improve autonomous driving

On Wednesday, Uber revealed its plans for 500 sensor-laden vehicles to be placed in nearly every corner of the world in 2026, to help it collect real-world driving data. The company demonstrated a design prototype using an external sensor-equipped Hyundai Ioniq 5.

Uber has assigned approximately 50 of these vehicles in total by this summer with a complete fleet expected to collect around 2 million miles of driving data each month. It is also the first car that Uber has remade since giving its self driving unit to Arora innovation back in 2020.

Why is Uber building this vehicle?

The cars are being developed by Uber’s AV Labs division, launched earlier this year to gather and analyze driving information on behalf of self-sufficient vehicle businesses. Uber will share this with partners such as Waymo, Avride, and WeRide.

All vehicles have 14 cameras, eight lidar sensors, and nine radar systems automatically generating a mirror image of every road and traffic status (360 degrees around). Uber asserts that this data will aid in the training of autonomous driving software and the general performance of upcoming driverless taxi services.

Uber Preserving Its Autonomous Automobile Aspirations

Uber says its aim is to build one of the world’s most geographically assorted autonomous driving datasets. Its already receives data from thousands of camera-fitted vehicles owned and operated by fleet partners in dozens of cities and across the globe.

This project is part of Uber’s greater plans for fully autonomous transport. The company also recently established a new business unit which is called Uber autonomous solutions which was launched in March 2023. It was made to use the growing industry and provide support  for robotaxis, autonomous trucking services, and self driving delivery robots.
