General Dynamics Names Insider Danny Deep as Its Next CEO
Synopsis
General Dynamics picks insider Danny Deep to succeed longtime CEO Phebe Novakovic in January. She will then become executive chairman.
What Happened
General Dynamics gets ready for a change in command.
Starting in January Danny Deep, the company’s president, will become CEO. Replacing Phebe Novakovic, who has run the company since 2013 Novakovic will stay on in the business as executive chairman.
The change comes at a time when demand for General Dynamics’ defence and aerospace products remains strong. The company provides a wide array of services through its Gulfstream private jets, submarines, military vehicles and technology.
Deep has a long history of working his way up the ladder at General Dynamics. He’s worked in senior leadership roles in functions ranging from land systems, combat systems and international operations.
It also made him president in 2025, which paved the way for greater responsibility and learning to run the company up to the point of succession as CEO. The leadership news follows General Dynamics’ solid earnings report, which showed its good quarterly results to meet Wall Street expectations.
Why It Matters
The company is selecting someone who would already know the company inside out. That familiarity could lead to an easier transition. He already understands its business, its people and the challenges with respect to various operations in it.
Novakovic’s transition to executive chairman also offers continuity. Keeping her on gives the company a chance to ease into the CEO role while having access to an experienced hand.
What Founders Can Learn
An entire leadership transition never happens in a day. It requires preparation.
General Dynamics hired Danny Deep as its president and then a year later moved him into the CEO role. It allowed him time to take on more responsibilities, learn the overall business and prepare for the rigours of running the company.
For founders, the take-away is pretty simple:
Create a business that can work without your involvement. A good founder does not make a great company. It requires a capable team, solid systems and leadership that keeps the business running.
This is not about making yourself irreplaceable. The aim is to create something that can build itself up enough to keep growing without relying totally on you!
