Inspired by a scene from the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles live-action film, where a character enters a very vibrant, underground space filled with arcade games, skateboards, and other kinds of games, Dave envisioned a similar space in real life as well. He wanted to make a place where people could immerse themselves in their hobbies without any judgment. A space for all things geeky.
Dave was a retail manager and a two-time business owner who partnered with like-minded individuals to bring this idea to life. Together, they got resources and started on a journey to establish the nerd cave, which is a blend of community Centre, retail store, and a hobby space under one roof.
Building a Dream Under A Budget
Starting with a modest capital of AU$75,000, the team faced the challenge of creating a functional and very appealing space without overspending too much. They adopted a cave style approach, emphasising creativity and resourcefulness. For example, instead of purchasing pre-built computers, they assembled 10 custom PCs by hand, sourcing parts from affordable suppliers. These DIY computers served the business for the entirety of its four-year operations.
The interior design of the space reflected the team‘s commitment to the community. They hosted regular events such as Magic: The Gathering nights, board game sessions, and tabletop role-playing gatherings. The space was designed to be flexible, accommodating different activities and fostering a sense of belonging for every person.
The Power Of Community Engagement
From the start of the nerd cave, prioritised community engagement by recognising the importance of word-of-mouth marketing. The team focused on creating genuine relationships with their customers. They approached local gaming clubs, offering them a venue to host their events, thereby including the business in the existing gaming community.
Social media platforms and event listing websites like Eventtribe were used to promote activities attracting mass audiences. The staff’s genuine interest in interacting with customers. Further strengthen the community point, making the nerd cave a loved spot for many.
Expansion and Challenge of Growth
As the business gained a lot of popularity, the team faced the challenge of accommodating the growing number of visitors. The first location was very cosy, but it quickly became overcrowded, leading to a decision to relocate to another place. The second location, which was situated in a prime area, initially seemed very promising; however, its proximity to 2 other gaming hubs and retail stores, both franchisees of the same company, led to increased competition and a decline in retail sales.
Despite these challenges, Nordica adapted by diversifying its offerings, introducing a wide variety of retail items to compete effectively with its competitors. They also continued to host events, maintaining their commitment to community engagement.
The Final Move And Subsequent Closure
The third and final move was prompted by external circumstances. The building housing their second location was slated for demolition, and the property owners were unwilling to negotiate a new lease. After an eight-month search, the team found a new space. However, the location was very far from universities, leading to a shift in their primary demographic from the 20-30 age bracket to a different audience.
The demographic shift impacted sales and attendance severely. The team struggled to adapt to the new location’s challenges, and after five minutes, they made the difficult decision to close the nerd cave permanently.
Why Did The Nerd Cave End?
The key factors that contributed to the failure of the company included unstable locations because it moved three times during its operation, with each move being a costly and disruptive process. They first moved due to a lack of space in their original location. Then they moved because the building was deemed for demolition. And in the third location, they found that it was not a suitable space for them due to shifting in demographic shifts.
Apart from this, the company struggled with financial strain. They had a lack of funding, and this made it very difficult to handle unexpected expenses. The market was also the culprit for the loss. Competitors such as big gaming bars grew, offering a more comprehensive experience by providing more space.

Despite the closure, Dave Desi remains very proud of what they achieved. The company provided a platform for people to connect over shared interests, fostering a sense of community. The lessons learned from the experience have been invaluable to him.
