Synopsis

Speaking at Mount Rushmore ahead of Independence Day, President Donald Trump praised America's legacy while sharply criticising progressive Democrats.

President Donald Trump opened America 250, the yearlong program for the nation’s 250th anniversary, on Friday with an address focused on honoring the country’s history while assailing progressive Democrats for their communist ideals.

Trump, who delivered the speech at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, had framed it as a tribute to America’s founding, its service members, and its economic accomplishments.

It marked the nation’s birthday on Saturday and kicked off the national program culminating in the July 4, 2027, 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Military flyovers, patriotic music and a fireworks display marked the event, drawing thousands to the iconic monument.

Political Message Shapes Opening Event

In his speech, President Donald Trump said that the strength of America’s founders was based on “freedom, entrepreneurship and constitutional government. He criticized Democrats “who try to destroy our heritage,” citing their progressive policy views as being based on rejecting our nation's history.

The address included many themes Trump has highlighted throughout his presidency, amid a deeply divided country as 250 years of national history looms as a significant commemorative event.
