Dangote Launches Major Share Sale

Next week, Africa’s richest man Aliko Dangote will launch what he calls the continent’s largest IPO (initial public offering) - for $1.6 billion from his Nigerian oil refinery - opening up investment opportunities to everyday people.

The IPO set to go live on September 14 is expected to pull in as many as ten million shareholders across the continent of Africa. Investors will be able to purchase as little as 10 shares each for 525 naira and the offer may raise about $1.6 billion (2.15 trillion naira).

Dangote’s Vision for Broader Ownership

At an event in Lagos on Monday to sign the documentation, Dangote said raising money was merely one step towards a more ambitious target. The goal, he said, was to allow ordinary Nigerians and Africans the opportunity to take a stake in what will be the continent’s largest industrial project.

The initiative was less about fundraising, he said and more about getting Africans into the refinery. He said he wants the investment to be a long-term beneficiary of common folks, likening his aspirations to that of Amazon whose early investors saw huge price appreciation on their investments. The idea is to form huge companies that benefit the whole of Africa, not only a few at its top, he said.

Scale of the Offering

The news comes in the wake of an IPO, which closes 13 October, that Dangote expects to be the biggest ever in Africa. Founded in 2024, the refinery is one of the two biggest single-storey refineries worldwide and is placed outside Nigeria’s financial capital Lagos. It’s a big part of Dangote’s larger commercial empire ranging from cement, sugar and fertiliser production.

Some of the money raised will be used to extend the refinery even more, as Dangote seeks to increase capacity and solidify his status as one of the major suppliers of refined petroleum products. At present, Nigeria is the biggest producer of crude oil in Africa.

In the event of expansion, and due to online production capabilities by 2028, this will be the largest refinery on earth. The business will also be extended by Dangote to Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Namibia.

Focus on Retail Investors

The IPO has been designed to attract small investors, even those with smaller income levels. Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals Chief Executive Officer, David Bird, said in the statement that the company wants retail investors to take a lead role in the offering.
