Trump Boycotts Africa G20; India, UAE Participate

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan will travel to Johannesburg this week to the first G20 summit in Africa. However, Donald Trump is leading a boycott of this summit. The two-day summit, starting on November 22, will be a meeting of 42 countries and international organisations under the theme of the South African presidency of Solidarity. However, the event will also be noted for the absence of the United States, as Trump announced earlier this month that no officials from Washington would attend the event.
Modi to Speak in All Three Sessions
On November 21, Modi will come and talk in all three sessions of the summit. The sessions will focus on inclusive economic growth, climate resilience, and the governance of artificial intelligence and critical minerals. India's Ministry of External Affairs said that.
On the invitation of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi will be the person to represent the President of the UAE, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and lead his country's delegation.
Among his reasons for not attending the boycott of the Trump summit, he charges South Africa with the persecution of the white minority in the country. In addition, he is angry at the country for its criticism of Israel in the situation of Gaza. He said it was the biggest of all shames. The president has put 30 per cent tariffs on South African goods.
In addition to that, he has driven the ambassador out of that country in the middle of an escalating conflict with President Cyril Ramaphosa. Besides Javier Milei, President of Argentina, who has decided not to participate, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin are also not coming to the summit. This means that their meeting will lack the presence of some of the biggest economies.
South Africa Says US Absence Is America's Loss
Ramaphosa brushed off the American absence. It is Washington's loss, he said. He promised that decisions would be taken that would move the various issues forward. The summit will go on with 20 G20 members; the United States will not be there.
Modi will join the India-Brazil-South Africa Leaders' Meeting on the sidelines. This is the fourth successive G20 summit to be held in the Global South. The sessions of the summit will take up financing for development. They will also take up issues of debt burdens facing vulnerable economies. Just energy transitions will be discussed, as will the role of artificial intelligence in development.
Focus on Helping Developing Nations
The South African Presidency placed particular emphasis on reform of the international financial architecture to better serve developing countries, following on from successive Presidencies by Indonesia, India, and Brazil.
Members of the G20 include the world's largest economies, comprising about 85 per cent of global GDP. It also represents two-thirds of the population of the world. When the G20 meets, decisions can affect billions. That is why Trump's boycott means something. The United States is the world's largest economy, and key voices will be missing from discussions without American officials present.
Trump's dispute with South Africa has been going up in flames for months. As an example, he blamed the country for "white people" that it was giving a hard time when it was not the case at all. The South African government is strongly rejecting such a charge. Besides that, the country has been loud in its opposition to the killing of Palestinians by Israel in Gaza. Consequently, this has upset Trump, who is famous for his firm and unshakable support of Israel, a lot.
So these issues, in combination, made Trump decide to go against South Africa. The tariffs he put in place hurt South African exports to America. Kicking out the ambassador was an even stronger signal of displeasure.
Other leaders who will not attend have their own various reasons. Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin frequently skip some international gatherings. Their absence is less surprising compared to Trump's boycott. Argentina's Milei was one of the few to align with the boycott, thereby showing that Trump is not the only one holding this view. However, the majority of G20 members are definitely dispatching their representatives.
