US Saudi deal

Synopsis

Saudi and US officials discussed billions in new investments at the US-Saudi Investment Forum in Washington on Wednesday. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said he would lift Saudi investment in America to one trillion dollars from an earlier six-hundred-billion-dollar pledge but gave no details or timeline. Top bosses from Chevron, Qualcomm, Tesla, Nvidia and other big companies came.

Saudi Arabia and the United States discussed new business deals on Wednesday. Billions of dollars in new investments are expected, according to officials from both countries. This occurred while Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman visited Washington. Most top business leaders attended the US-Saudi Investment Forum at the Kennedy Centre. The‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ chief executives of Chevron, Qualcomm, Cisco, General Dynamics, and Pfizer were present at the event. Also, the top-level management from IBM, Google, Salesforce, Boeing, Halliburton, and Adobe were there.

Most Influential Business Leaders Get Together in the US

One of the notable speakers at the forum on Wednesday was the Commerce Secretary, Howard ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌Lutnick. He‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍ mentioned that such agreements would create new opportunities for American companies to remain the world leaders in innovation, safety, and deployment. Bin Salman met with many of the influential executives from large American companies. The event with the executives came only a day after President Donald Trump welcomed bin Salman to Washington. Trump had a perfect word for him at the White House.

This is bin Salman’s first time in the United States since 2018. In that year, Saudi agents killed Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul. Khashoggi was writing pieces criticising Saudi Arabia. His death caused a big outrage all over the world. According to US intelligence, it was bin Salman who gave the go-ahead either for the capture or killing of Khashoggi. The crown prince claimed that he did not give the order. However, he said that he accepts full responsibility as he is the one in charge of the ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌kingdom.

Chapter two

Prince Says He Will Invest $1 Trillion

Bin Salman arrived in Washington ready to talk about something Trump loves: investments in America. He sat with Trump in the White House and said his country will invest $1 trillion into the US. This was after he had promised to invest $600 billion during a visit by Trump to Saudi Arabia in May. But, he did not give any indication of when this could take place or how.

Saudi‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ Arabia putting $1 trillion into the US would be a very challenging task. The Kingdom is quite busy with major expensive projects at home, such as the construction of futuristic megacities. These cities have already gone over their budgets and are delayed in their timelines. Besides that, Saudi Arabia is also investing in the building of stadiums for the 2034 World ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌Cup. All of this needs enormous amounts of cash.

Trump attended the investment forum, where lots of different companies came; many of them will probably announce that they are investing in Saudi Arabia. Trump himself might gain from closer business ties with Saudi Arabia, as he and several people close to him have made deals involving Saudi partners, buying and selling property and other investments.

Chapter three

Trump Says Family Business Not His Problem

On Tuesday, Trump tried to push back against those who say he has a conflict of interest. I have nothing to do with the family business, he told reporters. He said they have done very little with Saudi Arabia, actually. Some people worry about Trump having business ties with Saudi Arabia. They think this might change how he makes decisions as president. But Trump says he does not get involved in family business deals now.

In May, Trump took a four-day trip to the Middle East. While he was there, the US and Saudi Arabia said they would put billions of dollars into both countries. The deals covered defence and artificial intelligence. Defence deals mean weapons and military stuff. Artificial intelligence focuses on computer technology that can think and learn.

Saudi Arabia would like to wean itself off its heavy dependence on oil money. The kingdom attempts to develop other facets of how it generates money. This is why they invest in technology, tourism, and entertainment. The futuristic megacities are also part of this plan. One project called Neom includes a city that is in one straight line for hundreds of miles, while another encompasses building fancy resorts where tourists can visit the Red Sea coast.

Chapter four

Saudi Arabia: Can It Really Spend That Much?

Some people who study this stuff doubt Saudi Arabia can actually invest a trillion dollars in the US; the kingdom has a slew of expensive projects at home that need money. The‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ price of oil has not reached the level that Saudi Arabia desired. Consequently, there is less money flowing into the kingdom's treasury from the sale of oil. The government has taken out a loan to finance a few projects. Some projects have reduced their volume or been postponed due to the fact that they have become too ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌costly.

But Saudi officials say they mean it about the investment promise. They talk about the $600 billion already promised. They say the kingdom sees America as a very important partner. Trade between the two countries has grown in recent years. American companies sell lots of products and services to Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia puts money into American companies and buys American property.
