Microsoft has unveiled a computer that is powered by light rather than electricity, and the firm claims it could revolutionize the future of technology. The device, known as an analog optical computer (AOC), is reported to be more than 100 times more efficient than the current best processors. How the New Computer Works

Compared to regular computers that operate in binary code (ones and zeros), Microsoft’s design employs light beams to make calculations. Numbers are represented by varying levels of light brightness. When the light goes through sensors and lenses, it is capable of rapidly performing tasks such as adding and multiplying.

Applications in Banking and Healthcare

Microsoft has already tested the machine under real-world conditions. In a collaboration with Barclays Bank, the system used to settle trades among multiple parties at high speed resolved a complicated financial issue. The resolution was quicker and cheaper than current techniques.

In the medical industry, the AOC was able to replicate MRI scan images in much shorter time. It would take 30 minutes normally for a scan, but the test demonstrated it could be reduced to only five minutes. If implemented in hospitals, this would be able to fit far more patients per day.

Future Potential and Open Research

Microsoft thinks that the new system may even assist with artificial intelligence in the future. Initial tests indicate it can execute basic AI processes with very little energy consumption. Microsoft intends to provide some of its software tools to researchers globally so they can also help enhance this technology.

The latest version can handle 256 parameters in a single pass, already four times greater than a previous version. Future versions are hoped to accommodate millions of parameters to make them capable of working with extremely large AI models.
