Russia kicked off another massive series of drone strikes against Ukraine in the early hours of Tuesday, killing at least one and striking a maternity ward. Odesa, the major port city in the south, and Ukraine's capital city Kyiv, were simultaneously targeted.
In Odesa, drones attacked medical facilities and residences, killing one 59-year-old man and injuring four other individuals. The governor of the region said the strike damaged significant healthcare facilities that assist pregnant women and new mothers.
The Mayor of Kyiv Urges Citizens to Remain in Shelters
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko described the assault on the capital as "massive" and instructed people to remain in underground shelters. Emergency responders rushed to four sections of the city after the drones began striking at around 2 AM.
"Take refuge in shelters! The big bombardment of the capital persists," Klitschko posted on social media. He stated the attacks were occurring in multiple districts simultaneously, so it became even riskier for individuals.
Citizens fled into metro stations and underground shelters as air alarm sirens echoed throughout the city. Photographs depicted children and families in subway stations waiting for the all-clear signal.
Revenge for Ukraine's Secret Operation
These recent attacks followed on the heels of Ukraine pulling off a clandestine operation named "Operation Spider Web" that targeted Russian air bases deep within Russia. Ukraine attacked Russian bomber aircraft that have been employed to bomb Ukrainian cities.
Following Ukraine's attack on those Russian bases, US President Trump phoned Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Trump reported that Putin vowed to retaliate "very strongly" against Ukraine for such attacks.
Russia accused Monday's drone attacks of retaliation for Ukraine targeting their military facilities. This is how the fighting continues to deteriorate as both sides target each other's borders.
Air Raid Warnings Across Eastern Ukraine
The drone strikes weren't limited to Kyiv and Odesa alone. Air raid sirens sounded throughout large areas of Ukraine, particularly in the eastern areas, which have seen intense fighting. Places such as Donetsk, Luhansk, and Kharkiv all issued warnings for people to seek shelter.
Ukrainian authorities reported that this was one of the largest recent Russian drone attacks. The timing indicates that Russia wanted to make a point after Ukraine's successful airbase strikes against Russia.
War Keeps Spreading
The tit-for-tat bombardments illustrate how this war just grows. What began as battles in eastern Ukraine has now seen bombings well inside both nations. Both sides are employing drones and long-range missiles to strike targets hundreds of miles from frontlines.
