European authorities are seeking answers regarding Elon Musk's X following its acquisition by his other firm, xAI, for $33 billion. They need to understand how this massive acquisition is different.
A European Commission spokesperson said on Thursday that they're keeping a close eye on X due to the changes. Essentially, they're saying to Musk, "We're paying attention." This is not an accident; it's been months since the massive deal closed, and now they want specifics.
Europe has been keeping an eye on big tech firms more closely recently. They don't appreciate it when such firms disregard their regulations. X was already raising eyebrows for them, and now this shift in ownership provides them with even more reasons to investigate further.
Heavy Fines Could Hit X Soon
There's word that European officials may strike X with huge fines before they embark on their summer vacation in August. Some reports indicate that they are considering sanctioning X under their online regulations, but officials refuse to confirm whether that's the case.
The penalty might be very costly. Businesses that violate these regulations can be fined up to 6% of all the money they earn globally. That is millions or even billions of dollars. And if they just continue violating the rules afterwards? They might be banned from Europe altogether.
X has been attempting to correct things before they get into further trouble. This month, they added a warning message to their blue checkmark feature. It's akin to attempting to clean up a mess after somebody has already seen it.
Blue Checkmark Issues Keep Getting Worse
All this was caused when X started charging individuals for blue checkmarks. European authorities described this as essentially lying to users by giving them the impression that individuals who paid were more reliable than the rest of the world. They claimed X was intentionally deceiving individuals.
Before Musk purchased the firm, blue checks had a different significance. They indicated that celebrities, journalists, and influential individuals existed. Today, anyone can purchase one if they pay monthly. European authorities believe this deceives individuals into believing fake accounts.
Neither X nor xAI would speak to journalists about any of it. That's fairly typical for Musk's companies - they tend to remain mum when government bureaucrats begin inquiring.
All this mess demonstrates what occurs when giant tech firms continue to alter how they operate while attempting to comply with various regulations in various nations.
