The world’s largest illegal sports streaming website, Streameast, has been shut down following a joint operation by Egypt and the anti-piracy group Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment ( ACE ). Streameast has been visited more than one .6 billion times over the past year, offering free access to live sports, including Premier League football, Formula One races, in Major League basketball games around the world. ACE chairman, Charles Rivkin called the operation a “resounding victory” in the fight against digital piracy, saying it benefits sports leagues, entertainment companies, and fans around the world.

Authorities also said the crackdown includes the arrest of two men detained in a place near Cairo on suspicion of copyright infringement. Please have also seized the laptop, smartphones, cash, and credit cards used to operate the website. And the investigators also discovered a connection to a Shell company in the UAE that allegedly laundered around £4.9 million in advertising revenue since 2010, along with £150,000 in cryptocurrency.

Impact On Sports Broadcasting

Illegal streaming has grown to an industrial scale. According to ACE because sports broadcasting has become very expensive. The total value of media revenue around the world was $60 billion last year, with fans needing subscriptions to multiple platforms to watch different games. Streameast attracted visitors from the UK, US, Canada, Germany, and the Philippines.

While the company’s closure is a win for broadcasters, experts warn that it is not a complete solution. Ben Woods, an entertainment analyst, said many younger fans are used to free content online and may not have the means to pay for legal access to watch sports. Cracking down on one part of the solution and making sports more accessible and affordable for them is needed to reduce illegal streaming.

What Happens Next

Fans trying to access Streameast will now be redirected to ACE’s website, which suggests legal ways to watch sports. Streaming platforms around the world, welcome to the shutdown with COO Ed McCarthy, highlighting the piracy undermines the value of sports at every level and puts fans at risk.

Despite the operation, success analysts expect similar websites to appear as a piracy of functions like a whack-a-mole problem and industry experts believe that balancing enforcement with improved access to legal content will be the solution.
