Federal Judge Rules Complaint Improper

In a major legal update that has already made headlines and news around the world, a US federal judge has rejected Donald Trump’s $15 billion defamation lawsuit against the New York Times. The ruling was delivered on Friday by US District Judge Stephen Merryday, who said that the Complaint failed to meet the court’s requirements.

Judge Merryday explained that the term filing did not include a short and plain statement of why he was entitled to relief, as is required by federal law. Instead, the court said the lawsuit was dreadful, more like an attack on the Trump opponents than a proper legal document. The judge added that a complaint is not a protected platform to reach against an adversary. While dismissing the case, the judge gave Trump 28 days to file a new version if he chooses to continue with the case and has a better reason.

Trump’s Claims Against The New York Times

The case, which has drawn exclusive news coverage across the US, was filed earlier this week in Federal Court in Tampa. In it, Trump accused the New York Times of lying, defaming, and smearing him for far too long. The lawsuit, which stretched over 85 pages, also named Penguin Random House, the publisher of a book by Time reporters that Trump claims damaged his reputation.

In his posts on social media, Trump argued that the newspaper had to become a mouthpiece for Democrats and to fight back against them legally. The New York Times, however, dismissed the lawsuit, saying it had no merit and that it was simply an attempt to silence independent reporting.

Wider Debate

Judge Merryday’s order went further, calling the filing repetitive and superfluous, and declaring it improper and impermissible. Even if Trump’s claims were taken as true, the judge said, the way the lawsuit was written could not be accepted in the federal court at all.

Ruling comes as Trump continues to clash with media outlets. Some days earlier, he suggested that certain TV networks could lose their broadcast licensing after a suspended late-night host, Jimmy Kimmel. Kimmel had joked about a murder case involving a Trump supporter, which drew a lot of anger from the administration. Other comedians, including Stephen Colbert, spoke out in support of Kimmel, calling for a suspension and blatant censorship.

With this ruling, Trump faces another setback in his long-running battles with the press.
