Canada has rejected down 74% of Indian student applications. In August 2025, immigration authorities in Canada rejected three out of every four Indian student applications. The percentage of rejections was only 32% in August 2023. The situation has been completely different for the last two years.
Probably the reason is that not so many Indian students are willing to submit their applications. In August 2023, there were 20,900 applications from Indian students. That number dropped significantly to 4,515 by August 2025. Over the last decade, India has been the largest source country of international students in Canada. At present, Indian students are the ones facing the greatest number of rejections among students from major countries.
Why Canadian Officials Reject Indian Student Permits
In 2023, Canadian officials uncovered almost 1,550 study applications that included forged letters of acceptance. According to the figures released by the immigration officials, most fraud cases were from India. Their newly implemented verification procedure caught over 14,000 potentially forged letters of acceptance from students worldwide last year.
The checkup of international students in Canada has been extended to a much more detailed level. Besides, the officials have increased the financial requirement for students who need to show they have enough funds for their stay. At the same time, on the Border Pass Visa Application, Michael Pietrocarlo says that merely showing bank statements is no longer sufficient. Students are required to give a detailed account of the origin of every dollar and provide concrete proof that the money is legitimate.
Indian Students Find Canada Less Appealing Now
According to the Indian Embassy in Ottawa, they are well-informed about the rejections that have reached a record high. The Indian Embassy has publicly affirmed that the best students in the world are from India and Canadian educational institutions have been major beneficiaries of their academic superiority. The embassy, however, concedes that Canada is making its own decisions regarding who is granted study permits.
While Canada and India are working on mending their relationship, this predicament goes on. The two countries had a tumultuous year of disagreements. In 2023, ex-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the Indian government of being responsible for the murder of a Canadian in BC. India rejects the accusation as a complete fabrication.
The Canadian universities are not immune to the effects of the reduction of Indian students. The University of Waterloo is home to the largest Canadian engineering faculty. Over the last three to four years, they have lost approximately two-thirds of their Indian students. Ian VanderBurgh is in charge of student enrollment at the University of Waterloo. He explained that the government imposed restrictions on foreign student visas which altered their entire student demographic. “We pride ourselves on being an international university,” VanderBurgh said. Likewise, the University of Regina and the University of Saskatchewan have also reported a decrease in new Indian students.
