9 Civilians Killed in Thailand-Cambodia Border Clash as Tensions Escalate
Thailand has officially sealed its entire land border with Cambodia following a deadly military clash in a disputed area. At least nine Thai civilians have been killed and over a dozen injured after Cambodian forces reportedly fired rockets into Thai territory, striking a village and even hitting a hospital.
The incident is the last in the long-standing Thailand border dispute that has simmered for decades. Thailand foreign ministry has accused Cambodia of violating international law, while Cambodian officials claim they were forced to respond to aggression.
The Thailand-Cambodia border clash has now triggered full border closures, evacuations across multiple provinces, and rising diplomatic tensions.
Villages Evacuated, Casualties Reported Across Thailand Border
The authorities confirmed that deaths of civilians in different provinces around the areas that lie along the Thailand-Cambodia border have long been plagued by territorial disagreement. The Royal Thai Army reports that over 30,000 villagers have been evacuated from the region near the border.
One of the most serious incidents occurred when a Cambodian hit a hospital in Phanom Dong Rak district, injuring civilians and prompting immediate condemnation from Bangkok. In response, Thailand launched airstrikes on Cambodian military positions to escalate the violence.
The officials maintained that Cambodia fired the first shots, while Phnom Penh accused Thailand of using excessive force and dropping bombs on Cambodian soil
Diplomatic Ties Strained as UN Called to Intervene
In the wake of the Thailand border issues, Cambodia has formally downgraded diplomatic ties with Thailand and called on the United Nations Security Council to intervene in the situation. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said his country had “no choice but to respond with force.” Thailand, for its part, has urged Cambodia to pull back and wants it to intensify self-defence measures if the attacks continue from them.
This Thailand border news has raised fears of prolonged regional instability. Though full-scale war is considered unlikely, analysts warn the current lack of strong leadership in both countries could make de-escalation difficult.
With all Thailand-Cambodia border crossings closed, thousands remain displaced and on edge, waiting for the signs of peace and growing uncertainty.
