Sony has revealed that its PlayStation 5 (PS5) has surpassed a massive milestone,  80.3 million units sold through June 30, 2025. It is now one of the highest-selling video game consoles in history, falling only short by 7 million from surpassing the lifetime sales of the PlayStation 3.

The PS5 news was reported in Sony's first-quarter 2025 earnings, posted Aug. 7. The PS5 arrived in November 2020 and rapidly became among the most sought-after consoles in history, even though initial shortages and scalpers for high prices during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chapter one

Strong Sales Nearly 5 Years After Launch

Sony delivered 2.5 million units of PS5 during April and June 2025, a bit higher than the 2.4 million sold over the same period last year. For a console that's almost five years old, this indicates that demand is still healthy.

The PS5 has surpassed the PlayStation Portable in sales and is approaching the PS3's 87 million lifetime sales. But still far away from the iconic PlayStation 2, which was sold in over 160 million units.

Continuous hardware demand is supplemented by ongoing supply enhancements, major game titles, and the console's robust performance in both physical and digital stores, according to analysts.

Digital Games Drive Big Profits

PS4 and PS5 game sales in the first quarter of 2025 hit 65.9 million units, an increase from 53.6 million last year. Of these, 6.9 million were first-party titles developed by Sony, indicating that exclusive titles are still a significant contributor to the success of the brand.

The digital shift in gaming persists, with 83% of download full-game purchases versus 80% last year. Sony's PlayStation Network platform boasts 123 million monthly active users, up 7 million from last year.

Sony's Game & Network Services segment generated 936.5 billion yen (approximately $6.3 billion) during the quarter, up 8% from last year. That is nearly three times as large as Sony's movie business segment.

What's Next for the PS5

Despite criticism leveled against a shortage of brand-new PS5 exclusives, Sony remains ahead. Rumors indicate Xbox Series consoles have only managed to sell some 30 million units over the same period.

Big titles are in the pipeline, such as Ghost of Yotei later this year, and Death Stranding 2 has already put sales up after its June release. Most expect the PS5 to surpass the PS3's lifetime sales before the end of 2025.

With new accessories, revised hardware variants, and additional exclusive releases on the way in the next few months, the PS5 is poised to continue selling well into its sixth year.
