The Big Announcement Created Huge Hype But Nothing Has Really Started

Back in January, there was a lot of buzz around a new project called Stargate. OpenAI’s Sam Altman and SoftBank’s Masayoshi Son had promised something huge—a $500 billion plan to build massive data centers to power the future of artificial intelligence. The project was introduced in front of the White House, and it sounded like work had already begun. Headlines in the news reported that it would create more than 100,000 jobs, stimulate the U.S. economy, and take AI to the next level.

But months down the road, there isn’t much to show for it. The only thing that has been confirmed so far is a small data center that’s being planned in Ohio, and that is in the infancy stages as well. None of the large construction or hiring has begun yet. What was supposed to be a high-speed project has hardly moved at all. The buzz about Stargate has gradually given way to confusion and silence.

SoftBank and OpenAI Don’t Appear to Share Thoughts on How to Proceed

The biggest reason for the delay is that the principals of the project can’t agree on main points. SoftBank, it is reported, would like to construct the data centers on land that is connected with its own energy business, whereas OpenAI would like them elsewhere. Such shuttlecocking has caused everything to slow down. What appeared to be a collective effort is now riddled with controversies.

Even Oracle itself, reportedly included in the plan, has confirmed that nothing is officially arranged as yet. In the meantime, OpenAI is striking its own agreements with other firms such as CoreWeave and Oracle for the AI infrastructure that it requires—without Stargate being involved. So although the original vision remains in play, OpenAI is already developing alternatives to obtain what it requires.

A Big Idea With A Lot Of Potential Is Now Just Stuck

Stargate was not just intended to be a technology project. It was intended to produce jobs, stabilize the economy, and maintain the U.S. at the forefront of the AI competition. It was supported by heavyweight investors, and the government also appeared to favor it. But with no action, even the greatest ideas tend to fizzle out. Currently, it appears as though nobody is taking the lead or making firm decisions.

What’s more worrying is that the longer this delay continues, the harder it will be to turn things around. Big promises were made and fast progress was expected. Instead, we’re seeing a lot of waiting and little clarity. For now, the Stargate project is just stuck in limbo, with no clear future in sight.
