Google's New Goal: 150 MW India Solar Project
“

Synopsis

ReNew Energy and Google have agreed to build a 150 MW solar energy project in Rajasthan, India. The project will take off in 2026 and will be able to supply the electricity demand of more than 360,000 homes with clean energy all throughout the year. This cooperation between the two companies is very supportive of Google's carbon-neutral energy-by-2030 goal and India's renewable energy target that aims to double its production at the end of the decade. ReNew, a leading renewable energy company in India, is currently operating a total capacity of about 18.5 GW across various projects. According to Vrushali Gaud, Google’s representative, the transaction will not only ensure adding new solar capacity to the Indian grid but will also facilitate emission reduction in areas where Google's operations are difficult to decarbonise.

ReNew‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ Energy and Google are going to create a huge solar energy project in India to produce clean energy of 150 MW in Rajasthan. It is among the methods Google employs to achieve its goal of becoming zero-carbon by 2030. Besides that, it's helping India meet its goal of producing twice as much clean energy by 2030. Large American technology companies like Amazon and Microsoft are similarly putting their money into global clean energy ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌initiatives.

Chapter one

Power for Thousands of Homes

The‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ sun-powered plant is planned to be up and running in 2026. It is estimated that the installation will produce 425,000 megawatt-hours, approximately, of green energy per year. This quantity of electricity is sufficient to provide the basic needs of over 360,000 homes in ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌India. ReNew Energy is the largest producer of clean power in India. As of the first quarter of 2025, ReNew has already put into operation approximately 18.5 gigawatts of clean energy projects.

Ms Vrushali Gaud, Climate Program Lead at Google, said the transaction will introduce additional solar power sources to the Indian grid. She mentioned that the agreement will be instrumental in Google’s ongoing commitment to achieving net-zero emissions in hard-to-abate areas of the business. “This agreement brings new solar capacity onto the grid in a key region and helps us address challenging portions of our value chain emissions," she said.

Chapter two

Tech Giants Go, Green

Major technology companies in the U.S. are making significant efforts to shift towards cleaner energy sources. To‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ power their extremely energy-consuming data centres with clean energy, corporations like Amazon and Microsoft are negotiating deals. This is one of the means by which these firms lessen their carbon footprints and make lower contributions to climate change. Moreover, it is a good indication for countries such as India that are investing in the extension of clean ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌energy.

India‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ has outlined a highly ambitious plan for clean energy over the next several years. The country is targeting to increase its clean energy capacity to 500 gigawatts by 2030. It is, therefore, important that projects such as the ReNew and Google initiative get completed. Apart from mitigating pollution, global warming, and creating jobs, clean energy may also become cheaper in the coming ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌years.

Chapter three

A Bright Future Ahead

The collaboration between ReNew and Google is a perfect example of how companies could battle climate change together. Once‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ committed to the use of solar energy, companies will be able to lessen their environmental impact by lowering the emissions of polluting gases and be helpful to their countries in achieving their energy targets. The step will be taken by others once they see the first movers, so green energy will become more accessible worldwide. Such solar initiatives as the one in Rajasthan will be essential to the realisation of that dream. Moreover, renewable energy sources are not only good for the earth; they bring employment opportunities and can uplift the living standards of many ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌people.
