For years now Americans have enjoyed the luxury of cheap Chinese manufactured goods delivered straight to their door. At the forefront of this industry have been Temu and Shien. Companies like these have been supplying Americans wardrobes with affordable but quality items. However the end of Temu and Shien packages may be upon us. Beginning on May 2nd the Trump administration will plug a loophole that allows these companies to ship to the US while avoiding import duties.
Customer Disillusionment
TickTok and Reddit have been flooded with posts from Americans upset about the development. Many have been buying in bulk to stock up before the measures take effect. Sellers on TickTok and Alibaba will also be affected.
The concern voiced by many Americans highlights the significant inroads Chinese online retailers have made in the United States. Pulling customers away from dollar stores and other discount retailers through their low prices and extensive product offerings
The closure of the de minimis exemption loophole will impact shipments from China, including Hong Kong, valued at $800 or less. Starting May 2, packages sent via the U.S. Postal Service will incur a tariff equal to 120 percent of their value or a $100 fee per package. According to the White House. Customs and Border Protection will collect this fee, which is set to rise to $200 in June. Meanwhile, packages sent from China through other carriers, such as UPS, could face tariffs of up to 145 percent of their value.
Temu has already slashed its United States advertising budget and plummeted down the app store ranking. If no u-turn is made then it really could be the end of cheap Temu and Shien packages in the USA
