What was meant to be a night of celebration ended in tragedy in the Swiss Alps well before dawn on Thursday. A huge fire ripped through a packed late-night bar “Le Constellation” in the posh ski resort of Crans-Montana. Police say that dozens of people are dead and around 100 others are injured, with many seriously wounded.
A Party Ends in Tragedy
The fire broke out around 1:30 a.m., as the bar was filled with patrons welcoming the New Year. Many of the guests were teenagers and young adults from various countries. Initially, they thought an explosion had occurred, but officials now believe it was a fast-moving fire that led to what is known as a “backdraft,” which happens when a fire suddenly receives a strong burst of air.
Witnesses described the scene as one of pure chaos. Samuel Rapp, a resident who happened to be on the scene, said he heard people screaming and saw bodies lying in the street. “People were evacuating the building into cold night air, with some wearing clothes that had been on fire,” Edgewood police chief Michael Bolduc said. Because it was dangerously cold, the surprise of those temperatures both intensified injuries and took its own toll on those who had just fled the heat of the blaze.
Hundreds of firefighters, paramedics and other personnel rushed in ambulances and helicopters to the scene as the injured were flown off to special burn units in large cities like Geneva and Zurich. The local hospitals were overwhelmed, and the area was placed under a state of emergency.
Fire Spreads Through the Ceiling
Two young women who were inside the bar said they had watched the fire being set in the basement, reporters for The Times reported. A waitress was holding a bottle of champagne, which had a lit “fountain candle”, a type of sparkler, on top, they said. Per the tale, the sparkler touched the wooden ceiling of the room and it was on fire more or less immediately.
With the bar being all wooden finishes, the flames cascaded across the ceiling within seconds. There were attempts to scramble up a tight staircase and get out, but those on the upper floor were overtaken by flames as they reached the ground floor. Some had to smash windows and jump out, partygoers said.
Police are still investigating exactly what happened, but the Italian ambassador said he had heard that a firework might have set off the blaze. Whatever the reason, officials have emphasised that they do not believe this was an attack.
A Community in Mourning
Two white forensic tents and police tape had replaced the bright lights and music that were still blaring after dark in Crans-Montana by Thursday morning. Families from multiple countries have flocked to the resort in search of information about their relatives. The police said it would take a long time to identify all the victims, because the fire was so “extremely exceptional.”
Switzerland’s president, Guy Parmelin, said the entire nation was mourning. He scrapped his New Year’s Day speech and extended his deepest sympathies to the families. “A moment of joy has become a nightmare,” he said. A special helpline has been established for anybody seeking information on friends or family who were at the resort.
Crans-Montana is an extremely well-known skiing location and is preparing to host big races next year. Now, the town is hushed as people lay flowers and candles out in the snow. It’s a dark beginning of another year, 2026 for a place usually synonymous with beauty and fun.
