Former President Donald Trump announced his plans to add a very high tariff on medicine and computer chips imported into the USA. The new Trump tariff on pharma and Trump tariffs on chips could go up to 250% which may cause major changes in how these products are brought and sold in the US market.

In an interview, Trump said that the first set of tariffs will be announced within the next week or so. He explained that the tariffs on imported medicines will start small and grow over time, from a lower rate to 150% in a year and then to 250%. He also said Trump’s tariff update plans will include semiconductors, which are tiny parts used to make computer chips, phones, and cars.

Drugmakers Respond to Trump’s Tariff Plan

Trump said he aims to bring medicine production back to the United States. He said, “We want pharmaceuticals made in our country.” His comments come after a national investigation was conducted into how much America relies on foreign medicines.

After hearing Trump’s comments, some drug companies have promised to invest more in the US. For example, AstraZeneca has said it will spend $50 to grow in America. Other companies like Eli Lilly and Johnson & Johnson also plan to build new manufacturing plants.

Europe Also Faces New Tariffs

Trump warns the European Union that if it doesn’t meet a big investment promise, the US will raise the tariffs to 35%. This is more than double the current 15% agreed upon in a decent trade deal. He said that the EU promised $600 billion in new US investments by 2028 and $750 billion in energy purchases. But Trump is now demanding proof. Trump’s tariff update is expected to officially begin on Thursday, August 7, as part of his plan to bring back jobs and make the US less dependent on other countries for medicines and chips.
